Every island has one place that decides to be everything at once. On Block Island it’s Ballard’s: a restaurant, a private beach, a stage, a bar the length of a bowling lane, and an inn, all stacked onto the sand a two-minute walk from the ferry. Subtle it is not. On the right afternoon, it’s the most fun you can have on the island with your shoes off.
What it’s like
You come off the boat, turn left, and the music finds you before the building does. Out back, the restaurant spills onto its own stretch of beach — tables in the sand, umbrellas, cabanas along the dune line, and a beach stage that runs live bands through summer afternoons. The crowd is a full cross-section: families at the rail, boat crews on their third round, and at least one bachelorette party per horizon at all times. Inside runs breakfast through dinner. The kitchen took the island’s first-ever Best Restaurant title in the 2026 Best on the Block awards, and its greatest hits are the New England ones: the lobster roll that won the 2025 crown — generous, buttery, no celery nonsense — the chowder that took first at the 2025 ChowdaFest, stuffies, and a raw bar. The frozen daiquiri wall and the award-winning mudslide handle the liquid side of the afternoon.
The move
Go for a late lunch on a beach-stage day. You get the band warming up, a table in the sand without the prime-time scramble, and the afternoon in front of you instead of behind you. If your group wants the full production, the cabanas turn a beach day into a day camp with table service — book those ahead in July and August.

Staying here
The inn upstairs puts you closer to the ferry than anywhere else on the island, with the beach as your backyard — the practical pick for a no-car weekend built around the beach scene. Light sleepers should ask for rooms away from the stage side, for reasons the previous paragraphs have made clear.
