Let’s get the honest part out of the way: Block Island is not a cheap destination. It’s a small island with a twelve-week season, and the room rates say so. But here’s what the rates don’t tell you — almost everything that makes this island worth visiting is free, and the parts that aren’t have workarounds. I plan these trips for a living (well, for a family), so here’s the math that works.
The free backbone
The beaches — all seventeen miles of them — cost nothing. No stickers, no lots charging $40, no clubs. Fred Benson Town Beach, Mansion Beach, the whole run of Crescent: walk on, swim, stay all day. Mohegan Bluffs — the single best sight on the island — is also free, staircase included. So is the Greenway trail system, and so is watching the boats come into the Great Salt Pond at sunset.
A towel, a bike, and a long day are genuinely the whole formula here. The island’s best afternoon costs nothing; the second-best costs an ice cream.
Eating well without the bill
Breakfast: the counter at Aldo’s Bakery — homemade bread, scones, breakfast sandwiches — or Persephone’s if you want the café version. Both beat a hotel breakfast at half the price.
Lunch is where the island’s takeout counters earn their keep. Rebecca’s Seafood Takeout in Old Harbor does lobster rolls, clam cakes, and sandwiches built for a beach picnic — the sit-down water view is lovely, but the sand is free. Poor People’s Pub lives up to its name in the best way: pulled pork, fish tacos, real portions, casual room.
The budget rule for dinner: eat your big meal at lunch prices, then make dinner the cheap one. Nobody regrets a sunset picnic.
Getting around for less
Skip the car entirely — the ferry walk-on fare is a fraction of bringing a vehicle, and a bike covers the island honestly. Better: many inns include loaner bikes, an overlooked perk that pays for itself in two days. Ask before you book. Details in the getting-around guide.
The lodging problem, managed
Rooms are the budget’s boss battle. Three levers actually move the number: come midweek, come in June or September instead of the peak weeks, and book early enough to get the smaller rooms at the older inns (they exist, they’re fine, and they go first). The camping option is the true budget play if a tent is your kind of night. And a group splitting a rental house will beat per-room hotel math almost every time.
A sample cheap perfect day
Bakery breakfast. Bike north up Corn Neck to the North Light. Swim at Mansion Beach. Takeout lobster roll on the sand. Bluffs stairs in the late afternoon when the lot empties. Sunset over the pond. Total spend: breakfast, a rental bike, and one lobster roll — and it beats plenty of days that cost five times as much.
