Reading a Sound forecast like you mean it
Two numbers decide most small-boat days out here: sustained wind and seas. The unwritten local rule is that the Sound feels one notch worse than the forecast reads — an advertised 2-to-3-foot chop on an outgoing tide against a southwest breeze will bounce a small center-console around plenty.
Watch for the words "small craft advisory" and believe them. And if you're only here for the ferry ride: the big boats run in far worse than anything that would keep you off the water — when the ferry actually cancels, you'll know the Sound meant it.
