Here’s what makes island seafood different from mainland “seafood”: proximity and shame. The boats are visible from the table, everyone knows everyone, and a kitchen that served a tired scallop would hear about it at the post office. That accountability is the secret ingredient. Everything else is butter.
The lobster roll standings
The island runs a genuine championship here. Ballard’s took the 2025 title with the generous, buttery, no-celery-nonsense build. Then the 2026 vote went to South East Light Delights — the tucked-away spot up near the lighthouse that regulars had been quietly recommending for years, now officially out of the secret-handshake phase. Dead Eye Dick’s and The National keep podium pressure on both. Our advice: the roll tastes measurably better after the bluffs stairs, so structure the day accordingly.
Chowder, stuffies, and the raw bar
Chowder gets settled annually at the BIMI ChowdaFest, and Ballard’s took the 2025 crown with a classic New England build. Stuffies — stuffed quahogs, Rhode Island’s parochial glory — are the order-one-with-drinks move all over the island.
For raw bars, Dead Eye Dick’s in New Harbor runs one of the island’s most serious, with the harbor as the backdrop, and The Beachead covers oysters, seared scallops, and grilled swordfish with an ocean porch. When the swordfish is on the specials board, that’s not a suggestion — that’s the fleet talking.
The takeout tier
Not every great seafood meal needs a table. Rebecca’s Seafood Takeout in Old Harbor does lobster rolls and clam cakes built for the beach picnic — a genuinely great island lunch for the price of mainland fast food. Grab it, walk to the sand, done.
Timing intel
The seafood calendar peaks exactly when you’d hope: summer through early fall, with September the sweet spot — full kitchens, no lines. Shoulder-season travelers should call before crossing the island for a specific raw bar; hours contract with the crowds.
