A short trip can’t survive a wasted dinner, so let’s not waste one. This is the list we’d give a friend on the ferry: ranked, opinionated, and updated when the kitchens earn it. (The island votes its own favorites every year in Best on the Block — where our take differs, we say so.)
1. Ballard’s — the whole Block Island production
Fried seafood with your feet in actual sand, the lobster roll that won the island’s 2025 vote, chowder that took the 2025 ChowdaFest, and a beach stage doing its thing behind you. The island’s voters made it the inaugural Best Restaurant champion in 2026, and whatever the food critics of the world might think of volume, they haven’t eaten a lobster roll twenty feet from the tide line. Loud, alive, essential. Full profile →
2. The Barn at the Spring House — the best pure cooking
The counterargument, up the hill: a quiet wood-fired room where you watch dinner meet the flame. Runner-up in that same 2026 vote by a whisker, and the room half this island books for the anniversary. Ages 12 and up, reservations non-negotiable. Full profile →
3. Dead Eye Dick’s — the harbor classic
Since the 1940s in New Harbor: swordfish, lobster, a serious raw bar, and a deck over the water. The scallops are the benchmark order. May through September, done the old way. Full profile →
4. Winfield’s — the polished one
Chef Billy Chandler’s intimate room runs wider than island-standard — French, Italian, New American, Asian — on local ingredients. The lounge next door is the island’s best walk-in dinner. Full profile →
5. Kimberly’s — the dependable good dinner
Family-owned since 2014 on Ocean Avenue: seafood, steaks, pasta, patio, real bar. The reservation that makes everyone in a mixed group happy. Full profile →
6. The Beachead — the easy yes
Porch on the ocean, chowder done right, dogs treated like regulars (two Most Dog-Friendly titles running). The post-beach lunch answer. Full profile →
7. Ernie’s — the morning institution
Breakfast and lunch on Water Street since long before your first visit. Cash only, portions honest, harbor out the window. Full profile →
Where the specialists live
The category deep-dives carry the rest: breakfast, seafood, bars and nightlife, ice cream, fine dining, and the island’s beloved mudslide question.
One timing rule to rule them all: kitchens here run seasonal and close earlier than mainland habits expect, especially in the shoulder months. Book the big dinner for the early seating, watch the sunset from the table, and thank us later.
