There is no better arrival on any beach in Rhode Island. You come down 141 wooden steps with 200 feet of clay cliff rising behind you, the Atlantic filling the whole horizon ahead, and on a clear day, Montauk Point visible across the water. The plaque at the overlook tells the older story: the name comes from a 1590 battle in which the island’s Manissean inhabitants drove a Mohegan raiding party off these cliffs. This has been dramatic ground for a very long time.
The stairs are the deal
Going down is a stroll. Coming up is a workout, and July heat does not negotiate — carry water, pace yourself, and count the landings if it helps morale. Anyone with knee or heart concerns should know the overlook at the top delivers most of the view for none of the climb; there’s no shame in the balcony seats.
The water
Swimmable, with judgment. The shore is rockier than the sand beaches up north — water shoes earn their keep — and there are no lifeguards, ever. Surfers work this break when a south swell runs, which tells you what the waves can do; on those days, swimmers should stay shallow or stay dry. Calm mornings are the swim window. Check the marine forecast before committing the climb.
On the sand
Rocky, secluded, and scenic — this is a swim-and-stare beach, not an amenities beach. No lifeguards, no pavilion, no rentals: what you carry down is what you have, and what you carry down you carry up. Surfers work the break here when it’s on. The cliff shade arrives earlier than sunset, which in August is a feature.
Timing
The little lot at the top fills by mid-morning in summer — the entire island knows this beach. Go at 8 and you’ll share the stairs with photographers and nobody else. The light’s better then anyway. Or ride: the bluffs sit on the classic south-shore bike loop, a 15-minute pedal from town with one honest hill.
